Asbestos Symptoms: Have You Been Exposed to Asbestos?


Asbestos Cancer is also known as Mesothelioma. It is caused by long term exposure to asbestos. That’s why it is called asbestos cancer. You are probably wondering how being around asbestos can cause cancer. Does asbestos give off harmful fumes? No, asbestos does not give off any fumes but it is a unique mineral material that disintegrates into minute dust that can be inhaled.

When it is either eaten along with food or inhaled, it won’t digest or degrade and the body cannot expel it. As time goes on, it will cause inflammation and genetic changes that can lead to cancer. When you mistakenly inhale it once, the problem may not manifest. It is long term exposure that usually leads to asbestos cancer as it will accumulate in the body. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), this condition causes about half of all occupational cancer deaths all over the world.

Like all other ailments, when asbestos cancer is detected early, it is usually easier and cheaper to treat. This is why this article discusses some asbestos cancer symptoms. So, here are some symptoms to watch out for.

1.Clogged throat
When you persistently feel like your throat is blocked and you have to clear it every now and then, it could be a sign of something more serious. In addition, it may also be difficult for you to swallow your food. There are several things that can block the throat but it often fizzles out. If there is no improvement after a couple of days, it may be a symptom of asbestos cancer.

2.Pain during sex
Sudden menstrual changes can cause menstrual pain and pain during sex. The pain usually affects the lower back, abdomen, and the waist and gets worse during sex. It is often accompanied by fatigue. However, it is important to note that asbestos cancer is not the only type of cancer that causes painful sexual intercourse. Ovarian cancer also does.

3.Problem at the abdomen
Watch out for sudden changes in bowel habits like using the restroom more often. It may also be accompanied by constipation or indigestion. Pain and swelling in the abdomen are also not uncommon symptoms of asbestos cancer. But when you observe any of these, do not conclude because they symptoms of ovarian cancer, colon cancer, and stomach cancer as well. A proper screening will help you find out which of them is responsible.

4.Shortness of breath 
At an advanced level, patients of asbestos cancer could also encounter shortness of breath, chest pain and serious cough. If you encounter only one of the three, it may not be cancer but if the three develop about the same time, it is more likely to be symptom of asbestos cancer.

5.Sudden weight loss
Most ailments generally cause weight loss to different degrees but when the sudden loss of weight comes with some of the other symptoms outlined in this article it could be a sign or symptom of mesothelioma. Ensure you get to the root of it.

6.General body weakness

Another condition associated with the patients of the condition in review is general tiredness or weakness. They often wake up tired. This may be because the sickness impacts the quality of their sleep. Unfortunately, the tiredness usually lasts for several days.

7.Night sweating
One condition that some people living with this ailment have reported is night sweating regardless of the room temperature. They sometimes wake in the middle of the night with sweat all over their body even when the atmosphere is cool. However, not all the patients encounter this. 

8.Frequent fever
When asbestos cancer gets to an advanced stage, patients develop frequent fever. It may last for a few days before it disappears only to re-occur after a few days or weeks. The fever weakens them even more. No matter the fever medications taken, it will go and still come back.

9.General loss of appetite
Many of the patients find it difficult to eat. They only force themselves to eat and do not generally eat as much as they should. While some people believe that mesothelioma or asbestos cancer is the cause of the loss of appetite, others believe that the cause is the frequent fever. 


This medical condition is characterized by inadequate red blood cells or dysfunction red blood cells in the blood. This reduces the amount of oxygen that gets to the organs in the body. It is a major condition on its own but patients of asbestos cancer often develop it.

It is not advisable to conclude on your own because the symptoms outlined above can be caused by other conditions. You need to go for proper screening. More importantly, early detection is important for cancer treatment. The patients will have higher chances of survival when it is detected and treated early.
