You’ll Love This

  • It’s a hearty, filling vegetarian meal that your family will love. No one is going to miss the chicken on this pizza because the chickpeas seamlessly take its place. Chickpeas are just as filling, require no cooking, and lend themselves well to absorbing all that barbecue flavor!
  • If you haven’t had barbecue sauce on a pizza, this is going to be a game-changer. If you’ve been around the blog for a while, you know how obsessed I am with sauce. And barbecue sauce is pretty high up on my list of favorites. My fave barbecue sauce is Annie’s Sweet & Spicy. It’s the perfect combination of tangy spice with subtle sweetness and I love the short list of ingredients.
  • It doubles as an easy dinner or a quick appetizer! Throw together a batch of my delicious flatbread dough and enjoy this recipe as a BBQ chickpea flatbread instead of a pizza! Slice it into thin slices and serve with your favorite cocktail or bottle of wine for a simple party snack!

Instructions

Par-bake crusts for about 4-5 minutes. This pan is my favorite and helps get the crust super crispy on the bottom.

Tips

  • You can easily cut this recipe in half and just make one pizza if you’re feeding a smaller crowd. Or use half the ingredients for one pizza one night and save the rest for another quick and easy pizza dinner later in the week! I like to write my recipes so that they use up all the ingredients – rather than leaving you with half a can of chickpeas and half a pepper.
  • If your family is sensitive to spice, omit the chili powder from the recipe. This will cut down on the heat. If your family is into cumin, that would be a great substitute for the chili powder in this recipe too. It adds a delicious earthy, nutty flavor.
  • Let the fresh-baked BBQ chickpea pizza sit for a few minutes after removing it from the oven. This will allow the barbecue sauce to cool a bit and help everything hold together better. Piping hot barbecue sauce is a sure-fire way to burn your tongue and make a mess of this delicious pizza. A few minutes of patience will allow for a much more enjoyable eating experience!

Additional Toppings

  • Use this recipe as a blueprint, but customize it and make it your own! This is a great recipe to help you clean out the fridge and use up all those odds and ends you’ve got.
  • A few of my favorite others toppings to add/swap out include:
    • pineapple
    • bacon
    • shredded chicken
    • corn
    • black beans
    • pinto beans
    • banana peppers
    • jalapenos
  • Make sure you don’t pile the toppings too high or the pizza will become soggy. But you can definitely get away with adding an additional 1/2 cup or so of your favorite toppings!

Scale

Ingredients

  • 2 lb. pizza dough (try my homemade no-knead or quick pizza dough!)
  • 2/3 cup barbecue sauce + more for garnish
  • 8 oz. shredded mozzarella
  • 1 bell pepper, thinly sliced
  • 1/2 of a small red onion, thinly sliced
  • fresh chopped cilantro for garnish

BBQ Chickpeas:

  • 1 (15 oz.) can chickpeas, drained
  • 1/4 cup BBQ sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon chili powder
  • Kosher salt
  • fresh cracked pepper

Instructions

  1. Heat oven to 550 degrees.
  2. Split dough in two balls. Stretch dough across a lightly floured surface, gently forming it into two round crusts about 12-14 inches wide.
  3. Dust two sheet pans with cornmeal or use this awesome pizza pan. Transfer crusts to the pans.
  4. Par-bake crusts for about 4-5 minutes.
  5. Divide sauce evenly between the two crusts, spreading it in an even layer.
  6. Divide cheese, peppers, and onions between the two crusts.
  7. In a small bowl combine chickpeas, BBQ sauce, garlic powder, and chili powder along with a couple pinches of salt and pepper.
  8. Divide chickpeas between the two pizzas.
  9. Bake pizzas for 10-12 minutes. Then broil for 1-2 minutes until the cheese starts to get dark golden brown.
  10. Drizzle with BBQ sauce and garnish with fresh chopped cilantro.
